USWNT-The Pia Era - THEY DID IT!

Defense! The Pia Era began in November 2007 when US Soccer made the wise decison to hire Sweden’s Pia Sundhage to replace Greg Ryan. So far the USWNT is 18-0-1 since Pia (the first international to coach the USWNT) came on board in November. They went to China and won the Four Nations Tournament. They went to Portugal and won the Algarve. They went to Mexico, qualified for the Olympics, and won the CONCACAF tournament, defeating Canada on PK’s … and they beat Canada 1-0 in stoppage time to snag the Peace Queen Cup trophy! Now they’ve beaten Norway in Norway and Sweden in Sweden for the first time in USWNT history!

In late-April - early-May they were back in the USA for some friendlies - where Australia gave them some great, close games. (I’m really sorry that the Matildas won’t be at the Olympics!) They went to South Korea in June for the Peace Queen Cup. Pia has named her Olympic roster, and the team has played (and won) its two “Scandinavian matches.” They beat Brazil 1-0 on 7/13 and on 7/16 … but lost Abby Wambach to a broken leg on the 16th.

The team hit a rough patch when they ran into Norway in game one of group play at the Olympics. That 2-0 loss was their first under Pia (and first since the 4-0 Brazil WWC loss). After two early goals on miscues, they reverted to old ways, and looked disorganized and defeated for much of that match. Against Japan, they looked like they were beginning to bounce back and return to the more tactical and possession-oriented game that they’ve been working on … then everything changed! With a 4-0 win over NZ, and Norway’s 5-1 drubbing at the hands of Japan, the USWNT won the group. They faced Canada on 8/15/08 and the match went to overtime but the USWNT won it 2-1. Next up was Japan on 8/18/08 and after a 4-2 win, the USWNT made it through to the Gold Medal match against Brazil. (Germany and Japan played for the Bronze.) And guess what?  They did it!  The USWNT defeated Brazil 1-0 on a Carli Lloyd goal in OT after an epic, gritty battle.
Angela Scores the Game Winner!Stats of note as of 8/21/08 … the USWNT has scored 73 goals to their opponents’ 16 (and 7 of those 16 goals have been scored by the Aussies!). Even more telling, to my mind, they’ve got a full 60 assists to go with those 73 goals!
