Russ Feingold is going to be introducing a proposed amendment to the US Constitution that will require special elections to fill vacated Senate seats. Some states already do this by State law — and Feingold’s amendment would require all to do so. He states:
“The controversies surrounding some of the recent gubernatorial appointments to vacant Senate [...]

Yesterday President Barack Obama repealed the Mexico City Policy
- the infamous gag rule that pulled funding from health care providers who offered (or even just talked about) certain health care options for women. Yeah, you know what I’m talking about. Obama’s Day Three … was a mixed bag, reminding me that change is a process [...]

Oops – Ann’s jaw has apparently come unwired, as I see her name all over the blogosphere this morning. I won’t be linking to any of the stories or writing about her. To give her more attention and airspace than this is just silly and way more aggravation than anyone needs on a Tuesday morning. [...]

2008 was quite a year, was it not? We had economic turmoil, the history-making US election, Palin family values, the ascension of Rachel Maddow, the Olympics (including the USWNT’s Gold medal) … and doing every Rocky-loving, cheese-steak craving, Broad Street strolling heart good … the Phillies … and now the Eagles! I don’t even know [...]
As 2008 draws to a close, along with the nightmare that has been the Bush Presidency, we see a resurgence of violence in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Not so surprising, given the complex and festering problems in the region, and the incredibly superficial, simplistic, neocon approach touted by the Bushies. Obama takes office with a laundry [...]

Sunday morning (already) and I’m here at my computer with the shades drawn – so I’ve no idea what it’s doing outside. We’ve been without heat for the past couple of days – so keeping the shades down seems the better part of valor here in my east-looking room. The sun usually warms the south [...]

First off, get well wishes to HollyCornblog who is recovering from a bad ankle sprain sustained in a nasty fall at work. Keep it iced and raised … and, as we like to say to Willie (and to Ruby — but with much less effect), “Heel!” [sic]
Between HollyCornblog and Hope Solo, things have been a [...]

With Stevens now officially out (congratulations to Mark Begich), the chances of Sarah Palin continuing to grace the news pages as she had to this point are significantly diminished. Buh bye, Sarah … it’s been real.
Lieberman has been forgiven … in a move that seems at once practical and deep … and that leaves me [...]
Another Halloween has gone by with no trick or treaters on this hill (and now we have a hefty basket of chocolate to work our way through). It’s November and we’re at four days and counting. As the sun rises, for the last time in Daylight Saving mode, let’s see what’s going on out there [...]
There’s lots to be said for symmetry! Indeed, back in ‘80, the first time the Phillies won it all, yours truly was about to turn 28 … and now here we are 28 years later! Yeah, symmetry!
On a chilly night in Philly, they did it again! Go Phils! Charlie Manual created a bunch of believers [...]
Can we be witnessing a triumph of reason? A friend in Portland Oregon sent me this news of a Republican candidate for Congress endorsing Obama. As the article appears on the Truthout.org site,
“Washington – Joel Haugen, a Republican fighting a tough congressional race against the Democrats in Oregon, has fallen out with his party. The [...]

On Larry King Live tonight … Michael Moore will be Larry’s sole guest for the majority of the hour.
Michael will be interviewed live on location with a group of plumbers who support Barack Obama.
Don’t miss Mike with “Plumbers for Obama” on Larry King Live tonight (Thursday, October 23rd) at 9:00 PM ET/6:00 PM PT on [...]
Guess we missed out on the basil this year! This morning there’s serious frost everywhere. Stern frost. Dour frost. A layer of it whitens the windows and powders the ground. The nasturtiums still look miraculously green, but the zinnias and cosmos are brown. November brown. This frost will disappear as the sun rises and warms [...]
Make-Believe Maverick, by Tim Dickinson appears on Rollingstone.com. JordanCornblog has already published a link to the Dickinson article on this blog, I just learned. So this post serves as a second “thumbs up”. The article reports McCain’s actual choices while a POW, an account provided by Air Force lieutenant colonel John Dramesi, who was also [...]
Watch Josh Marshall from TPM for a nice look at some details about John McCain’s not-very-good week (and why he’s been backpedaling from little things like debates). And Palin just continues to amaze …
Here’s the text of a piece of her Katie Couric interview (you can view it at the end of the clip above):
Couric: [...]
Wow – it sounds like McCain fell on it (or in it) last night. I was flipping between the Giants-Redskins and the convention … neither of which was very inspiring. And this’ll be short this morning, as our coffee maker overflowed … which has set everything back considerably. (They say bloggers are supposed to share [...]
Remarks of Senator Barack Obama
“The American Promise”
Democratic National Convention
August 28, 2008
Denver, Colorado
As prepared for delivery
—-
To Chairman Dean and my great friend Dick Durbin; and to all my fellow citizens of this great nation;
With profound gratitude and great humility, I accept your nomination for the presidency of the United States.
.
Let me express my thanks to the [...]
To my mind, this was one of the finest moments in quite a collection of ‘em over the past couple of days. Bill came through last night, too.
The historic milestone that Obama’s nomination represents is both cause for celebration and cause for sadness … because in 2008 we should be well beyond celebrating this as [...]
John McCain’s campaign launched an ad that accuses Barack Obama of being more like a celebrity than a leader. Interestingly, in this piece for The Atlantic, Marc Ambinder details the reaction of John Weaver (former McCain strategist and friend) to these tactics.
I agree. What McCain had going for him was that he seemed a different [...]

Just take a look at these images from McCain’s week (so far) … in comparison to the bits and bytes on the airwaves featuring Barack Obama. Almost makes me feel sorry for the Straight Talker.
Meanwhile, here’s an article from Scripps News Service about the newly-configured USWNT. I thought it was an interesting slant. As new [...]
